5-HTP May Help Stabilize Mood and Reduce Emotional Fluctuations in Stressed Individuals
Research into 5-HTP, a compound that boosts serotonin production, and its effects on emotional regulation in stressed individuals is limited. However, existing studies suggest it may help stabilise mood and reduce emotional fluctuations.
5-HTP, derived from tryptophan, is a direct precursor to serotonin, often called the 'happiness molecule'. It interacts with other neurotransmitter systems like dopamine and norepinephrine to support motivation, focus, and emotional balance.
Several studies have shown promising results. A six-week study in Psychopharmacology found that 5-HTP supplementation improved mood stability in individuals with mild depressive symptoms. Another study in Journal of Affective Disorders reported reduced irritability and mood swings in stressed individuals. 5-HTP has also been found to alleviate mood symptoms in those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
To maximise its effects on mood and sleep, 5-HTP should be taken with meals or before bedtime. It's recommended to start with a low dose (50-100 mg per day) and gradually increase if needed.
While more research is needed, current studies suggest that 5-HTP may help stabilise mood and reduce emotional fluctuations in individuals with chronic stress, mild anxiety, and premenstrual mood swings. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.
