AOK: Adult ADHD Diagnoses in MV Tripled - ADHD Diagnoses Surge in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Especially Among Women
ADHD diagnoses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have risen sharply over the past decade. A new analysis of billing data from AOK-insured residents shows a nearly threefold increase in adult ADHD cases since 2013. The trend is especially noticeable among younger women, who were often overlooked in the past.
In 2023, 0.41% of insured adults in the state were diagnosed with ADHD, up from just 0.13% in 2013. The data, drawn from AOK records of individuals aged three and older, reflects a near-representative sample of the population. While diagnoses among children aged 3 to 17 have stayed stable—or even dropped slightly for boys—the rise in adult ADHD diagnoses has been striking.
The study highlights a shift in how ADHD is identified, particularly among women. With diagnoses rising steadily, more adults are accessing treatment and support. The findings suggest that earlier underdiagnosis, especially in girls and young women, is now being addressed.
