Adrian Belew Overcomes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Returns to Full Shredding Strength
Adrian Belew, renowned guitarist and long-time collaborator of David Bowie, has successfully recovered from carpal tunnel syndrome surgery on his left hand. The surgery, which was performed in the United States, has allowed him to resume his demanding guitar work without pain or any lasting effects on his playing ability.
During the tour with King Crimson, Steve Vai, Tony Levin, and Danny Carey, Belew experienced continuous numbness in his left hand from waking up until soundcheck. The numbness was so persistent that it led Belew to fear he might not play again. However, Steve Vai, who had undergone the same surgery twice, introduced Belew to one of the best surgeons in the country.
The surgery, described by Belew as "simple," was followed by an "easy recovery." Belew's left hand was tender during recovery, but he gradually worked his way back up to his normal playing tempo. Today, he is back to full strength and "full shredding," indicating his technical skills and dexterity remain intact post-surgery.
Belew and Rob Fetters, another talented musician, were inspired by Eddie Van Halen's tapping technique and tried their hands at it. Belew's recovery has been a testament to his resilience and dedication to his craft.
With his left hand now repaired and functioning without any problems, Belew continues to deliver electrifying performances on the legendary King Crimson tour. His friendship with Rob Fetters, formed over their shared love for music, remains strong, and they continue to inspire each other in their respective careers.
