German Weather Service Unveils Revolutionary Pollen Monitoring System

The German Weather Service (DWD) has announced the launch of a groundbreaking pollen monitoring network, aiming to provide real-time, location-specific pollen forecasts for allergy sufferers. This innovative system, one of the most modern in the world, leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the accuracy and frequency of pollen count measurements.

The new devices, installed in Hamburg, Freiburg in Baden-Württemberg, and Offenbach in Hesse, measure the air four times a day during peak pollen hours. They analyze data directly using digital microscopy and AI, capturing current pollen concentration within one to six hours. This is a significant improvement over the previous manual counting methods, which only provided data after two to three days.

The DWD has been testing this system at the DWD Center for Medical-Meteorological Research in Freiburg. The new network records 35 different pollen types, including hazel, alder, ash, birch, grasses, rye, mugwort, ragweed, and others.

To enhance the accuracy of the daily pollen count measurements, DWD employs advanced data processing techniques such as machine learning algorithms. These models are trained on extensive meteorological and environmental data, including historical and real-time pollen observations, weather patterns, and other relevant parameters. This allows for a more precise simulation and prediction of pollen dispersion and concentration dynamics across urban areas.

AI models, such as boosted generalized additive models and tree-based algorithms, contribute to identifying key weather variables influencing pollen levels. This is crucial for daily updates and warnings.

The project, costing two million euros, also includes the setting up of 16 pollen monitoring stations across Germany by the end of 2026. After a multi-week testing phase, the data from the new pollen monitors will be used operationally.

Stefan Gilge, head of the department responsible for air hygiene at the DWD Center for Medical-Meteorological Research (ZMMF) in Hamburg, and Christina Koppe, head of the climate and environmental advice department of the DWD, are leading this initiative.

With this new system, allergy sufferers will be able to check online daily for current pollen counts. This will significantly improve medication and outdoor activity planning for those affected by allergies. The real-time pollen data will contribute to better public health responses, marking a considerable improvement over traditional pollen counting methods.
