Alexandria historian McArthur Myers died today after a long illness. He was 73. City leaders remember 'Mac' Myers as a kind man with an endless supply of stories who was motivated to keep Alexandria informed of its frequently troubled history. A lifetime resident and Living Legend, Myers was integral in erecting historical signage in and around the city.

Alexandria historian McArthur Myers has died at the age of 73 after a long illness. A lifelong resident of the city, he was known for his deep commitment to preserving local African American history. His passing was first announced by The Zebra, a local publication.

Myers spent over four decades as a mental health social worker in Washington, D.C., before retiring in 2015. Alongside his professional career, he dedicated himself to Alexandria’s history, serving as a longtime member of Universal Lodge No. 1. In 2020, he helped mark the lodge’s 175th anniversary.

Myers leaves behind a legacy of service to both his community and its history. His work in law enforcement, social services, and historic preservation shaped Alexandria for decades. The city now honours his memory as a dedicated guardian of its stories.
