Ashwagandha's Global Boom Raises Questions About Safety and Benefits

Ashwagandha, a traditional Ayurvedic herb, is surging in popularity worldwide. People are turning to it for stress relief, better sleep, and improved mental and physical performance. Yet concerns remain about its safety and effectiveness.

Over the past five years, demand for ashwagandha products has grown steadily. Between 2021 and 2025, the global market expanded at an annual rate of 10–12%. North America led the trend, particularly in the US, where sales increased by around 15% each year. Europe followed, with Germany and the UK driving demand, while Asia-Pacific saw rapid growth in India and China.

Many users take one to two tablets daily, as suggested on supplement packaging. Some, like Sara, occasionally double the dose for stronger effects. However, the herb's unregulated status raises risks. Unlike prescription drugs, ashwagandha lacks standardised concentrations of active ingredients, making side effects unpredictable. Possible adverse reactions include stomach problems, skin irritation, liver inflammation, and disruptions to hormone-producing glands like the thyroid. Experts also debate the scientific backing for its claimed benefits, leaving many questions unanswered.

Ashwagandha's rising popularity reflects a broader shift toward natural supplements for stress and wellness. But its unregulated nature and potential side effects mean users must proceed with caution. Without consistent quality controls, the risks of organ damage or unexpected reactions remain a concern.
