Experts: Asian Tiger Mosquito in Over 200 Municipalities in Southwest Germany - Asian Tiger Mosquito Spreads Across Germany, Sparking Health Fears

The Asian tiger mosquito has spread to more than 200 areas across southwestern Germany. Health officials are growing concerned about the risk of virus transmission as the mosquito establishes itself in new regions. Recent reports confirm the first cases of chikungunya in the Upper Rhine Valley, raising alarms about further outbreaks.

The Kabs association has developed a tailored plan to tackle the mosquito problem. Their approach includes treatments with the biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), expert advice for local authorities, and specialised training programmes. To reach difficult areas, helicopters are used to distribute Bti over mosquito breeding sites from the air.

The spread of the Asian tiger mosquito continues to pose health risks in southwestern Germany. Kabs is actively implementing control measures, but challenges remain due to funding and the mosquito’s resilience. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as new cases of chikungunya emerge in the Upper Rhine Valley.
