Assam’s Prerana delivers health kits to TB patients under Nikshay Mitra Scheme

An organisation in Assam has stepped up to support tuberculosis patients as part of a national health drive. On Wednesday, Prerana distributed health support kits to 20 patients in Lakhimpur. The initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s TB-Free India Campaign, which encourages community involvement in fighting the disease.

The event took place under the Nikshay Mitra Scheme, a government-backed programme offering health insurance, treatment assistance, and financial aid to TB patients. Health experts have long stressed that proper nutrition, alongside medication, plays a vital role in recovery. The kits handed out contained food tailored to meet the specific dietary needs of those undergoing treatment.

Local health worker Pankaj Sabhapandit oversaw the distribution, with District TB Officer Dr Hridaya Nanda Barua and other officials in attendance. They highlighted the importance of community participation in meeting India’s goal of eradicating tuberculosis. The gathering also aimed to reduce the stigma often faced by patients. Officials called on more individuals, voluntary groups, and businesses to register as Nikshay Mitras. By doing so, they can contribute directly to patient care, ensuring access to healthy food and medical support.

The distribution of health kits in Lakhimpur marks a practical step in improving TB treatment outcomes. With continued community and organisational involvement, the scheme seeks to expand its reach across the region. The effort reflects broader national strategies to combat tuberculosis through collective action.
