Atlanta’s food crisis deepens as demand for meals soars by 70% in three years

Food insecurity in metro Atlanta and North Georgia has surged, with demand for food assistance now 70% higher than three and a half years ago. Rising costs have left many families struggling to afford basic meals, pushing local organizations to expand their support efforts.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank reached a major milestone in 2023 by distributing its one billionth meal. This achievement came after years of growing need, with the billionth meal officially handed out on March 4, 2020, at its Atlanta facilities.

To help address the crisis, Ciara Wilson, Russell Wilson, and their Why Not You Foundation have donated $400,000 to the organization. The funds will strengthen the Food Bank’s ability to source, store, and distribute nutritious food across the region. The donation is part of a broader push to ensure families have access to healthy meals. Officials at the Food Bank have emphasized that contributions of any size make a difference, urging the community to step up as demand continues to rise.

The $400,000 donation will directly support food distribution in metro Atlanta and North Georgia. With more families facing financial strain, the Food Bank’s efforts remain critical in providing meals to those in need. The organization continues to call for ongoing support to meet the growing challenge.
