Austria lowers colonoscopy age to 45 in bold men’s health initiative
In a significant move to enhance men's health, Austria has expanded health insurance coverage to include colonoscopies for men starting at age 45. This decision aligns with the Austrian Cancer Society's focus on preventing prostate and colorectal cancers, which are rising among younger men.
November, dedicated to men's health, highlights the importance of preventive care. Men's average life expectancy is 79 years, five years less than women, indicating a need for targeted health initiatives. Experts urge an organized screening program for prostate cancer, with 7,485 new cases diagnosed in 2022.
Despite the rising incidence of colorectal cancer among men under 50, only 12% participated in preventive medical check-ups in 2022, compared to 13.6% of women. Men are also more likely to develop inguinal hernias and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In 2022, men accounted for 26 million sick days, 3.4 million more than women.
The expanded colonoscopy coverage aims to detect colorectal cancer early, with the Austrian Cancer Society emphasizing prevention. Men are encouraged to prioritize their health, with November serving as a reminder for regular check-ups and healthy lifestyle choices.
