Austria's Hidden Crisis: 1.1 Million Face Food Poverty Amid Rising Costs
Austria faces a growing crisis as food poverty affects around 1.1 million people—12% of the population. Many are forced to skip meals or rely on cheap, highly processed foods. In response, the Samaritan Federation has launched the Hunger Winter campaign to highlight the issue and provide support. The campaign aims to tackle food poverty by distributing free food parcels every month. Each package contains long-life foods, hygiene products, and fresh produce. Families receive parcels worth €60, while individuals get €30 of essential supplies. The Samaritan Federation currently hands out 600 of these parcels monthly.
To raise awareness, donation appeals will be projected onto the façade of Vienna's MuseumsQuartier. A donation box has also been placed at the MQ Infopoint. The initiative initially received funding from the Social Ministry but now depends on public contributions to continue. Food poverty has serious health consequences, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Mental health struggles are also common among those affected. The Samaritan Federation encourages donations via their website (samariterwien.at/armvent) or bank transfer to AT43 2011 1890 8900 2400 (Erste Bank), using the reference *Armvent* AAN. Every act of solidarity is seen as a step toward preserving democracy. The organisation stresses that collective support can make a real difference for those in need.
The Hunger Winter campaign seeks to address a pressing issue affecting over a million Austrians. With public donations and awareness efforts, the Samaritan Federation continues to provide essential food aid. The initiative's success now relies on ongoing community support to sustain its monthly distributions.
