Austria's New Training Programme Boosts Remote Emergency Doctor Support
Austria has expanded its tele-emergency services with a new training programme for doctors. The initiative, launched in January 2023, allows physicians to support paramedics remotely from any location with an internet connection. The system is already active in several regions, helping non-physician responders manage emergencies more effectively.
The first basic training for tele-emergency physicians took place in Lower Austria. Organised by the Austrian Red Cross and the regional medical chamber, the programme attracted 27 doctors from different areas. Participants completed online modules before attending an in-person session with practical exercises and simulated cases.
The tele-emergency system connects physicians to paramedics in real time. They provide guidance for non-critical patients and assist until an on-site doctor arrives. This approach helps fill gaps in emergency care, especially in areas where response times may be longer. With the training now complete, more physicians can join the network. The flexibility of remote work allows them to support emergencies without being physically present at the scene.
The new training programme strengthens Austria's emergency response capabilities. Tele-emergency physicians can now assist paramedics across multiple states, improving patient care in real time. The system's expansion is expected to enhance medical support in both rural and urban settings.
