Baden-Württemberg Secures Future of Ecclesiastical Universities with €15M Deal

Baden-Württemberg's Ministry of Science and regional churches have signed a significant funding agreement for three ecclesiastical universities of applied sciences. The deal, spanning 2026 to 2030, secures the future of these institutions and their students.

The beneficiaries are the Evangelical University of Applied Sciences in Ludwigsburg and Freiburg, along with the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Freiburg. These universities, with a combined student body of 4,000, offer 18 programmes in social work, health, education, and teaching.

Science Minister Petra Olschowski praised the agreement, stating it ensures high-quality education in social and health studies. The funding is not religion-specific, making these courses accessible to all. It also promotes fair employment, equal opportunities, and diversity, aligning with the state's climate protection goals.

The state's financial commitment will grow annually by 3.5% from 2027, providing stability and planning security. This follows the signing of the Higher Education Funding Agreement III in April 2025.

The funding agreement guarantees the continuation of these universities' courses until at least 2030. While the exact sponsors for Ludwigsburg and Freiburg's ecclesiastical universities are yet to be detailed, the regional churches have confirmed their support for the funded study places.
