Bali Resort Death Highlights Fatal Risks of Extreme Fruitarian Diet
Tragedy struck at the Sumberkima Hill resort in Bali, where a 27-year-old woman, Karolina Krzyzak, passed away in December 2024 due to starvation. Karolina had been following a fruitarian diet, which health professionals warn is not sustainable and can lead to severe malnutrition.
Karolina's health declined rapidly during her stay at the resort. Upon checking in, she was already emaciated and fragile, weighing only three-and-a-half stone. She had been struggling with anorexia and was consuming solely fruits, nuts, and seeds. Dieticians caution that such a restrictive diet can result in deficiencies of vital nutrients like vitamin B12, protein, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are typically obtained from a varied diet. This can lead to malnutrition and various health issues over time. Furthermore, the high sugar content and low nutrient diversity in a fruitarian diet can cause blood sugar spikes and dental problems. Despite the hotel staff's urging, Karolina refused to seek medical help. Her condition worsened, and she was found deceased in her room.
