Belarusians Shifting to Yellow Potatoes for Health Benefits
Belarusians are shifting their preference from white-fleshed potatoes to yellow ones, a trend that has been gaining momentum since the mid-80s. This change is driven by the recognition of the nutritional benefits of yellow potatoes.
Historically, Belarusians favoured white-fleshed potatoes, a preference that dates back about 40 years. However, recent attention has been drawn to yellow-fleshed potatoes due to their higher nutritional content. Yellow potatoes contain more vitamin A and carotene than their white counterparts. Notably, protein in potatoes is absorbed faster from boiled yellow potatoes than from eggs, making them a more efficient source of protein.
This nutritional superiority is also reflected in the broader range of beneficial substances found in yellow potatoes. While there is no specific record of Valadim Makhanio discussing this topic on the STV channel, the health benefits of yellow potatoes are increasingly recognised among Belarusians.
The shift in preference towards yellow-fleshed potatoes in Belarus is a testament to the growing awareness of their nutritional advantages. With more vitamin A, carotene, and a faster-absorbing protein, yellow potatoes offer a healthier alternative to the previously favoured white ones.
