Billie Eilish to star in Sarah Polley's bold The Bell Jar adaptation

A new film adaptation of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar is in development, with Oscar-winning director Sarah Polley at the helm. Billie Eilish, known for her music and recent role in Swarm, is in advanced talks to star as the novel's troubled protagonist, Esther Greenwood. The project marks Eilish's return to acting and a fresh take on Plath's semi-autobiographical story.

First published in 1963, The Bell Jar follows Esther Greenwood, a young woman whose psychological decline mirrors Plath's own struggles. The novel delves into the pressures faced by American women in the 1950s, tracing Esther's breakdown and eventual institutionalisation. Its themes of mental health and societal expectations remain sharply relevant today.

This isn't the first time Plath's work has reached the screen. In 1979, Marilyn Hassett played Esther in a film adaptation that failed to connect with audiences. A 2007 version, with Julia Stiles once attached, never materialised. Now, Polley's adaptation aims to bring a new perspective to the story, with Eilish poised to take on the lead role. For Eilish, the project holds personal significance. She has described it as a 'return to her roots,' stepping back into acting after her appearance in Prime Video's *Swarm*. No further casting details have been announced for the film.

The adaptation will reintroduce Plath's iconic novel to modern audiences, with Polley's direction and Eilish's performance at its centre. If finalised, the film will join a small but notable history of screen versions, each attempting to capture the raw intensity of The Bell Jar.
