Breisgau District Calls for New Professional Guardians Amid Rising Demand
The Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district administration will hold an online event on April 21, 2026, to introduce professional guardianship. The session aims to encourage new candidates to enter the field, addressing a growing need for support workers across Germany. The virtual event will take place from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Prospective attendees can register in advance to receive login details.
Professional guardians, known as Betreuer:innen, assist individuals who cannot manage their own legal affairs due to illness, old age, or mental health issues. Their responsibilities include helping clients with daily tasks and ensuring they remain active in society.
Nationwide, around 16,000 professional guardians are currently registered. However, demand for their services continues to outstrip supply. In the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald region alone, about 70 guardians are listed, highlighting the need for more qualified professionals.
The district administration hopes the event will attract self-employed candidates. No official figures for 2024 or projections for 2026 are available, but the shortage remains a pressing concern. The online session seeks to boost recruitment in a field facing increasing demand. Those who attend will learn about the role's requirements and how to start working as a professional guardian. Registration remains open for anyone interested in joining the profession.
