The Last Hope for Gaza's Cancer Patients: Destroyed!

Cancer clinic in Gaza forced to shut down following attacks

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the European Hospital in Gaza, the sole beacon of hope for heart treatment, neurosurgery, and cancer patients, has been forced to close its doors. This tragic development comes after the hospital sustained severe damage from Israeli attacks as per the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The attack on the hospital, located in Khan Yunis, was initially justified by the Israeli army as a "precise strike on Hamas terrorists in a command and control center." However, independent verification of these claims remains dubious. Following the attack, the hospital's infrastructure was left in such a state that medical staff could no longer ensure safe care for their patients.

The European Hospital was not the only medical facility in Gaza targeted during these attacks. The Nasser Hospital in the same region was also hit on the same day, allegedly due to an Israeli attack on Hamas terrorists. The Islamic Palestinian organization has been accused by Israel of misusing hospitals in Gaza for terrorist purposes.

The closure of the European Hospital has left a significant gap in the already struggling healthcare system of Gaza. With the hospital's closure, medical services like neurosurgery, heart treatment, and cancer treatment—none of which are available elsewhere in Gaza—are no longer accessible. "Hospitals must be protected. They must never be militarized or attacked," emphasized the WHO chief.

After a temporary ceasefire, Israel resumed its assault in the Gaza Strip on March 18. The attacks have resulted in extensive damage to the region's healthcare facilities, with Israel also blocking humanitarian aid deliveries since early May.

In response to the devastation, Doctors Without Borders have previously described the European Hospital as "one of the last lifelines in the destroyed health system of the Gaza Strip." With the Nasser Hospital also facing persistent threats, the health crisis in Gaza shows no signs of abating.
