CDC Shooting Not Attributed to Misinformation Argument by RFK Jr.

In the aftermath of the tragic shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta on August 8, 2025, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has faced widespread criticism for his stance on vaccine misinformation.

Kennedy, who has a history of promoting vaccine skepticism and misinformation, particularly regarding COVID-19 vaccines, has been under fire for his recent decision to pull contracts and funding for mRNA vaccine development. This move has been met with opposition from health experts, who argue that these vaccines, credited with saving millions of lives and awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2023, should not be sidelined.

Following the shooting, which claimed the life of a police officer and left many questioning the safety of public health institutions, Kennedy expressed condolences but also criticised the CDC. This dual response was seen as insensitive by many, given the context of the incident.

Over 750 HHS employees have signed a letter urging Kennedy to stop spreading misinformation and to ensure the safety of CDC and HHS workers. The letter accuses Kennedy of fueling mistrust and a hostile climate against public health officials, and links the shooting directly to politicised rhetoric that transformed public health experts into targets.

Senators and public health officials have also condemned Kennedy's appointment of controversial figures like Dr. Robert Malone to advisory committees and his firing of experienced vaccine experts. These decisions have been linked to weakening public health infrastructure and increasing danger to workers.

In summary, Kennedy's stance on vaccines and his leadership style have been connected by many public health experts, employees, and lawmakers to spreading misinformation that has contributed to a climate of fear and hostility, culminating in the tragic CDC shooting and ongoing threats against public health institutions and employees.

Jeff Williams, who oversees safety at the CDC, described the incident as a "targeted attack ... related to COVID-19." It is worth noting that Kennedy has not provided any evidence to support his baseless claims about the CDC. The decision by Kennedy's department to pull contracts and funding for mRNA vaccine development remains controversial among health experts.
