Guided Tours for Dementia Patients at Schloss Charlottenburg - Charlottenburg Palace Launches Sensory Tours for Dementia Patients in Berlin
Charlottenburg Palace has introduced new sensory tours designed for people with dementia. The programme invites participants to explore the historic site through touch, sound, and scent. Organisers hope the experience will spark memories and encourage engagement in a supportive setting.
The 60-minute tours focus on the life of Queen Sophie Charlotte. An actress leads visitors through key rooms before stepping into the palace gardens. Along the way, participants can handle objects, listen to period music, and even try a fan dance to immerse themselves in the era.
Four dates are planned for 2024: April 14, May 19, September 22, and November 3. The initiative builds on similar sensory tours already running at Britz Garden, Berlin Zoo, and the Natural History Museum. These visits are tailored to engage multiple senses, helping those with dementia connect with their surroundings.
Berlin is home to around 65,000 people living with dementia. The programme aims to strengthen their abilities while offering a shared cultural experience. Malteser, the organisation behind the tours, emphasises participation and comfort for all attendees.
The sensory tours at Charlottenburg Palace provide a structured way for people with dementia to interact with history. By combining storytelling, movement, and sensory elements, the programme creates an inclusive environment. Further sessions will continue throughout the year at selected Berlin landmarks.
