Käthe Kollwitz to Jutta Müller: Exhibitions in Chemnitz - Chemnitz Art Collections explore food, hope, and iconic German artists in 2024

The Chemnitz Art Collections have announced their exhibition programme for the year, with a strong focus on food as a central theme. Several museums under the institution will also showcase works by renowned artists, including Käthe Kollwitz and Wolfgang Mattheuer, alongside contemporary reflections on hope and sporting history.

At the Gunzenhauser Museum, a three-part series will delve into the cultural and social importance of food. The exhibitions will examine its role in daily life, tradition, and broader society.

Meanwhile, the Schlossberg Museum will present a special display featuring items from the estate of Jutta Müller, the legendary ice skating coach. Müller’s influence shaped generations of athletes, leaving a lasting mark on international sports. The Art Collections at Theaterplatz will host 'Utopia: The Right to Hope', an exhibition bringing together contemporary artists. Their works will propose imaginative visions for a fairer and more sustainable future. The exact opening date has yet to be confirmed. Another highlight includes a retrospective on Käthe Kollwitz, pairing her powerful prints and drawings with modern photography. The show aims to bridge her early 20th-century struggles with today’s social issues. A separate exhibition will explore the careers of Wolfgang Mattheuer and his wife, Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt. Their combined artistic legacy will be presented through key works from their respective oeuvres.

The Chemnitz Art Collections’ 2024 programme spans food culture, historical art, and forward-looking themes. Visitors can expect a mix of contemporary debates, sporting heritage, and iconic German artists. Further details on specific dates will be released in due course.
