Three Thai Doctors Face Disciplinary Action Following Controversial Transfer of Former Prime Minister

The Medical Council of Thailand has officially submitted documents pertaining to the disciplinary action taken against four doctors, including one who transferred former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from a Corrections Department Hospital to a VIP room at the Police General Hospital, to Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin.

The Council initially ruled to issue disciplinary measures against three doctors. Two of these doctors had their medical licenses suspended, while one received a formal warning. The Minister now has 15 days to review the decision and consider whether to veto it.

On Friday, Prof Dr Amorn Leelarasamee, a member of the Medical Council, confirmed that all relevant documents were submitted to the Minister, ensuring that a comprehensive, fair, and transparent review could take place. The process is grounded on documented evidence and confidential committee deliberations, Amorn assured.

Critics have claimed that the Council reached a decision without receiving complete documentation; however, Amorn refuted these allegations, stating that the Council had requested full documentation from the outset and had even extended the deadlines twice to accommodate additional submissions. Ensuring a fair and thorough review was paramount to the Council, he stressed.

If the Council determines that the matter has been adequately reviewed, the case will be closed. Nevertheless, should new and substantial evidence emerge, it may be reconsidered, though Amorn noted that most relevant information has already been examined by both the Council and the Minister.

Meanwhile, Vice Minister for Public Health, Thanakrit Jitareerat, reported that the Medical Council has provided the Privy Medical Council with all necessary documents. The Privy Medical Council will convene on May 26 for a complete review of all information before submitting its recommendation to the Public Health Minister on May 27.
