South Korea Maintains Stable COVID-19 Infection Levels Amid Rising Cases in Neighboring Regions

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported on May 30 that COVID-19 infection levels in South Korea have remained stable, despite a rise in cases in neighboring regions such as Hong Kong and Taiwan.

As of the 20th week of 2025, there were 100 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across 221 monitored hospitals, showing only slight fluctuations. This indicates a stable hospitalization rate throughout the country.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), older adults account for a significant portion of hospitalized patients, emphasizing the vulnerability of this group. The KDCA has urged high-risk individuals, particularly older adults, to get vaccinated, anticipating potential summer surges.

To mitigate potential risks associated with seasonal changes and increased travel, the KDCA has extended the COVID-19 vaccination campaign for high-risk groups until June 30. The campaign aims to protect these individuals and reduce the impact of any potential outbreaks.

The focus of health authorities in South Korea remains on maintaining personal hygiene, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated to prevent the further spread of the virus.

This update comes from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters briefing, led by Second Deputy Director General Lee Han-kyung of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The Ministry did not provide any specific updates regarding COVID-19 during the briefing.
