Croatian Group to Construct National Pediatric Medical Facility

Let's Slice It:

May 4th, 2025 - A kickass Croatian consortium takes on the monumental task of building the National Children's Hospital.

Gather 'round, folks! According to ol' Poslovni Dnevnik, a group of top-notch Croatian firms—Kamgrad, ING-GRAD, Radnik, and ZDL Arhitekti—have scored the contract to construct the first phase of the National Children's Hospital (NDB) in Blato, Zagreb. Believe it or not, they won the bid despite offering a pricier deal than the robust Turkish contingent.

Here's where it gets intriguing: our homegrown heroes proposed a whopping 189.99 million euros excluding taxes, but with taxes included, they're looking at a cool 237.5 million euros. The Turks, on the other hand, had a more wallet-friendly plan with a bid of 168.70 million euros pre-tax, but crunching the taxes brought their total to 210.88 million euros. The public bidding tidy stood at 190 million euros without taxes. Although the Turkish teams offered a lower price, our Croatian crew still edged them out due to a lack of detail in their submission.

Now, keep your eyes peeled: the construction site is going under experienced surveillance, and the public bidding process has just kicked off. The price tag for rigorous monitoring and timely service execution amounts to 4.2 million euros. Despite the area receiving a much-needed revitalization with the new National Children's Hospital, the intimidating structure of the University Hospital won't disappear completely during the first phase of construction.

Want to hear the twist? The sidelined Turkish companies now have the option to appeal to the State Commission for the Control of Public Procurement Procedures. We'll see if they're brave enough to throw their hats in the ring.

If they choose not to appeal, the Croatian consortium will have a year to design the main and detailed plans and secure the building permit. The actual building part will take 38 long, grueling months, with the first phase expected to begin in 2026. And, once all the dust settles, the hospital should be ready to open in the spring of 2029!

The new National Children's Hospital will spread out over a 44,788 square meter area, housing up to 781 beds (481 hospital beds, 300 day-hospital beds). The center of expertise will unite capacities from existing hospitals across Croatia.

And guess what? The building will be powered mainly by renewable energy sources, with an impressive 84% coming from solar and geothermal energy!

FYI, the country's dream of a National Children's Hospital dates back to the '70s, but strife put a halt to the project. This time around, we're all hoping for a peaceful, successful completion!
