What's the deal with a dacha? We're not just talking shish kebabs here, but also those annoying backaches - because, when we reach those beds, we seldom stop on time.
And don't forget about sunstroke! Even on a pleasant, breezy day, you can end up under the weather.
Dr. Sofia Eliashvili, a nutritionist, therapist, and head of the lab studying eating behavior correction at the NMICT of therapy and preventive medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, breaks it down for us.
1st on the list: Knotted spines and aching bones from overdoing it.
Politics aside, lifting heavy weights (buckets of water, fertilizers) or standing in awkward positions for long periods (weeding) can lead to sciatica, osteochondrosis, or lower back pain (you know, that sharp, prickly sensation).
But don't worry, doc has some advice:- Limit your body's workload: Give your muscles some TLC by setting reasonable limits on your physical activities.- Gear up: Protect your skin with gloves to prevent fungal infections and other nasties from penetrating through microtrauma.- Stay out of the heat: Work during the cooler parts of the day, and remember to take it easy under the sun's glare.
2nd on the list: Allergy attacks.
Run-ins with plant pollen, insect bites (you name the species: bees, wasps, mosquitoes), or chemical treatments can lead to itchy skin, hives, or even asthma attacks for some unlucky souls.
Stash some antihistamines (gels, tablets, or drops) in your first aid kit, just in case.
3rd on the list: Heatstroke and sunburn.
Working in the sweltering heat without a hat and neglecting your fluid intake can bring on dizziness, nausea, unconsciousness, and even charbroiled skin.
Here's what you can do:- Wear sun protection: Don a hat and slather on some SPF lotion.- Stay hydrated: Drink more water, and don't push it during the hottest hours.
4th on the list: Arthritis flares.
Exposure to damp surroundings (watering plants or working in the chill) or cooling off after sweating a storm can exacerbate arthritis conditions.
If you're affected, steer clear of strain and keep your medication close at hand.
5th on the list: Gastrointestinal issues and foodborne illnesses.
Neglecting hygiene, chowing down on unwashed veggies, or improper storage in the heat can cause tummy trouble, like diarrhea, vomiting, or fever.
So, keep your paws clean and be careful with what you eat.

There's no need to push yourself on the dacha until you fall flat on your face or end up with a sore back.
Doc Eliashvili offers some alternative fun:- Active strolls: Explore the area at a leisurely pace.- Foraging: Pick seasonal fruits and herbs with care.- Body care: Take time for yoga or morning exercises in the fresh air.- Green fingers: Plant a small veggie garden for a bit of greenery.- Creativity: Paint or read in the fresh air, or indulge in some family games.
And don't forget to keep an eye out for those common dacha wounds - cuts from rusty nails or snake bites. KP.RU has warned you about these, too.
