Dangerous Decree: City Council Prohibits Swimming in the Rhine River, Risking Lives

In a bid to ensure public safety, the city of Dormagen has implemented a swimming ban within its Rhine areas, effective from August 31, 2025. The ban, which is valid until December 31, 2027, aims to prevent further tragic accidents due to the Rhine's dangerous currents.

First Deputy Mayor and Head of the Ordnance Department, Fritz Bezold, explains that the ordinance provides a clear basis for law enforcement to intervene and enforce violations. The ban is based on an urgent decision by the city council and can be found on the city administration's website.

The swimming ban applies to the entire area, except for actions by authorities or rescue services, exercises and deployments of water rescue services, sports clubs or the fire department, approved events with explicit permission, brief entry and exit when boarding and disembarking watercraft, and practicing angling within the applicable regulations.

Mayor Erik Lierenfeld reiterates the purpose of the ban, stating, "The Rhine is a heavily trafficked river with strong currents, waves, and fluctuating water levels. Swimming in the Rhine is considered very dangerous, even for experienced swimmers. People on the shore or in shallow water can be swept away by waves or currents and pulled into the river."

The ban on swimming in the Rhine prohibits swimming in more than knee-deep water. Violating the swimming ban can be punished with a fine of up to 1,000 euros. The ordinance also allows for exceptions for specific activities and situations.

The city administration supports the action of numerous other cities along the Rhine that have already adopted the swimming ban. The ordinance provides a clear framework for enforcing the ban on swimming in the Rhine in Dormagen.

It is crucial for the public to adhere to the swimming ban for their safety and to ensure that the Rhine remains a safe and enjoyable space for all. For more information, please visit the city administration's website.
