Davao del Norte’s youth leaders tackle rising depression with hope and action

Depression among youth in Davao del Norte has emerged as a significant health concern over the past decade, with increased awareness and reports since around 2015. The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) leaders are taking the initiative to address this issue, with Helen Mae I. Discaya, the provincial federation president, leading a campaign for mental health awareness.

Discaya and other SK leaders are encouraging their peers to serve as models of optimism and draw strength from within. They aim to build a better community through mental health programs and projects, starting in schools and extending to local government units and SKs. The advocacy is planned to tackle depression, a common problem among youth, with many organizations working to address it.

Social media is suggested as a tool to spread mental health awareness among youth. Teen Tambayan facilities are highlighted as spaces for youth to express emotions, meet others, and enjoy company. SK leaders emphasize leading with kindness and understanding the concerns of the youth, as mental health problems are the most pressing concern among them.

The SK leaders in Davao del Norte are committed to strengthening mental health advocacy, starting in schools and communities. They encourage youth to support each other and seek help when needed, with Discaya leading the charge in raising awareness and promoting mental well-being.
