Day Marked for Medical Professionals as They Strengthen Stance Against Termination of Pregnancies

The German Medical Association has endorsed the relaxation of abortion regulations in Germany, according to a resolution passed during a meeting in Leipzig this week. The resolution calls for regulating abortions during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy outside of the criminal code. However, women seeking abortions will still be required to receive counseling.

The move, which does not currently have political backing, is expected to strengthen support for unwanted pregnant women and the legal protection of doctors performing the procedures. "This contributes, in our view, to enhancing care for unwanted pregnant women and the legal security of the doctors performing the abortions, particularly in the case of counseling, where there is an opportunity to protect both the life in development and the life of the woman," said the German Medical Association.

Germany's criminal code, section 218, states that abortions in the country are fundamentally illegal. However, abortions are exempt from punishment during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy if counseling has been received. Abortions are also allowed in specific medical circumstances or in cases of sexual assault.

Earlier reports suggest that a bill aimed at regularizing abortions up to the 12th week after conception was proposed in the German parliament but failed to secure a majority. On the other hand, critics argue that the existing regulations criminalize abortion. The proposed bill is said to create barriers for access to quality care and stigmatize women seeking abortions as well as healthcare providers involved in the process.

Including telemedical abortions introduced in 2022, access to abortion services has improved, particularly for early pregnancies, though the overall accessibility remains an issue of debate. While the search results reveal no recent proposals or statements by the German Medical Association advocating for the relaxation of abortion laws, the issue of reproductive healthcare remains a topic of ongoing discussion in Germany.
