Coffee Ice Cream Like Annette's: A Gritty, Flavorful Twist
If you're looking to create a coffee ice cream that toes the line between traditional and experimental, you've come to the right place. This recipe, inspired by my sister-in-law Annette, offers a unique take on the classic dessert. To satisfy both coffee purists and those who like to mix things up, follow along!
Makes 1 1/2 to 2 pints
Gather Your Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup table sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup finely ground coffee beans
- Optional add-ins: Heath bar pieces, toasted almonds, chocolate chips, or chopped Oreos
Instructions
- Infuse the Coffee Flavor:
- If you're using instant coffee, simply whisk it into the mixture.
- However, for a more robust coffee flavor, steep finely ground coffee beans in the heavy cream over low heat in a small saucepan for about 10-15 minutes. Once the mixture is fragrant, strain the infused cream through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing on the solids to extract as much flavor as possible. Discard the grounds.
- Prepare the Ice Cream Base:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the infused heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling.
- Chill the Mixture:
- Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Then, cover and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Churn the Ice Cream:
- Once the mixture is chilled, pour it into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Add Optional Mix-ins:
- During the last 2 minutes of churning, add your preferred mix-ins (Heath bar pieces, toasted almonds, chocolate chips, or crushed Oreos).
- Freeze the Ice Cream:
- Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and place it in the freezer to harden for at least 2 hours.
- Serve:
- Scoop and serve this ice cream with your favorite toppings or enjoy it plain!
Tips and Tricks
- Want a deeper coffee flavor? Increase the amount of coffee used or steep the coffee longer for a more intense taste.
- If you don't have an ice cream maker, try using the "no-churn" method, freezing the mixture in a shallow metal pan and blending it in a food processor once frozen solid. Note that the texture may not be as smooth as when using an ice cream maker.
