DHZC statement: Course maintained by ship.
The German Heart Center Berlin, part of Charité, has successfully completed one year of operation for Europe's largest centre for catheter-based heart valve treatments - the Structural Heart Interventions Program (SHIP).
SHIP, led by Prof. Dr. med. Henryk Dreger and PD Dr. med. Axel Unbehaun, is an interdisciplinary care unit for catheter-assisted heart valve interventions. It is one of the largest interdisciplinary valve centres in Europe, performing over 1,500 catheter-based heart valve interventions annually, with more than 1,300 Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedures.
The SHIP program focuses on advancing patient care and outcomes through the development of specialized nursing concepts, such as Enhanced Recovery After Intervention (ERAI) Nurses. It also aims to expand its focus on healthcare research, developing specialized nursing concepts, and structurally integrating specialized Physician Assistants in catheter-based heart valve therapy.
The SHIP outpatient clinic provides a central point of contact for initial consultations, indication checks, pre-stationary care, anesthesia clarification, and follow-up. It offers all modern procedures for treating mitral and tricuspid valve diseases, including sail-based reconstruction ("clipping") and full catheter-assisted valve replacement.
The quality of SHIP's treatment is regularly evaluated by independent institutions. The IQTIG commendation highlights the DHZC's outstanding results, including no notable issues with mortality or complications, very low revision rates, and high process quality. Moreover, the AOK health navigator has rated SHIP with the highest rating for medical quality, patient safety, and experience.
The DHZC, part of Charité, has consistently ranked among the top German heart centers in the IQTIG report. Prof. Dr. med. Volkmar Falk, Medical Director of the DHZC, has stated that SHIP has created a future-oriented, interdisciplinary structure that sets clinical, nursing, and scientific standards.
