Distraught relatives of a wealthy Greek woman, who died following an insect bite, vow to take legal measures against hospitals due to alleged medical oversight by healthcare professionals.
Marissa Laimou, a rising star in the theatre world, passed away in her Knightsbridge home on September 11, 2025. The actress, who had recently recovered from a battle with breast cancer and an extremely rare blood disease (HLH), was just 33 years old. Her family is now alleging negligence by two well-respected London hospitals in the days leading up to her death.
Born and raised in Knightsbridge, London, Marissa grew up with her two twin brothers who are 26. She pursued her dreams in musical theatre, studying in New York and the University of Arizona before returning to London in 2018. Her family and grandmother were instrumental in supporting her career, with Marissa crediting them for always believing in her.
In the recent past, Marissa had starred as Juliet in her production of Romeo and Juliet in London and was preparing for her latest Oliver performance. However, her life took a tragic turn when she was bitten by an insect before her death, according to her family.
In the days before her death, Marissa expressed concerns about her health at the Leaders in Oncology Care (LOC) on Harley Street and University College London Hospital (UCLH). Doctors at these hospitals ultimately decided to discharge her, but her family claims they have seen an official diagnosis stating that her death was due to a "toxic affect of venom" caused by an "animal or insect bite".
Despite being born into wealth, Marissa's family say she loved London and couldn't live anywhere else but England. Her uncle, George Lemos, and his family spent decades living in a block of luxury flats in Mayfair. The wealthy Lemos family, one of the biggest dynasties in the Greek shipping industry, are planning to take legal action against the NHS.
The family is still awaiting post-mortem results and are left in the dark about the cause of Marissa's death. Ms. Laimou's mother, Bessy, believes her daughter's death was due to negligence by the hospitals. Marissa was discharged by a hospital before she died on September 11, 2025; however, the specific medical facility that discharged her is not named in the available sources. She was then brought to a hospital in Oviedo by helicopter after a severe injury but died there from her injuries.
This tragic loss has left the theatre community and her family in shock. Marissa's spirit and talent will be sorely missed, and her memory will live on through her work and the lives she touched.
