EIB's €740M Ukraine Recovery Effort: New School Opens in Sukhovolia
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has played a significant role in Ukraine's recovery since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022. By July 2025, the EIB had provided €740 million through recovery programmes, with a total of €3.6 billion in financing since the conflict started. One of the key projects is a new school in Sukhovolia village, Lviv Oblast, which opened its doors to students and staff in 2025.
The Sukhovolia school is a result of the Ukraine Early Recovery Programme, one of three recovery initiatives supported by the EIB. The idea to build the school was initiated by the EIB and its partner donor countries as part of the EU for Ukraine Fund. The school, which cost €3.85 million to build, can accommodate 500 children and over 80 staff. It features modern classrooms, workshops, sports facilities, and landscaped green spaces, providing a safe and engaging learning environment.
The school's kitchen and canteen were designed in line with First Lady Olena Zelenska's nutrition reform in schools. This ensures that students receive healthy meals, promoting their well-being and academic performance. The EIB's commitment to Ukraine's recovery is evident in its acceleration of activities through the EU for Ukraine (EU4U) Initiative. The Sukhovolia school is one of six EIB-financed educational facilities completed or underway in Lviv Oblast, demonstrating the EIB's focus on rebuilding infrastructure and improving community services.
The EIB's €740 million investment in Ukraine's recovery, including the Sukhovolia school, is a testament to the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine's rebuilding efforts. The new school not only provides a modern learning environment for children but also reflects the EIB's dedication to improving community services and accelerating recovery initiatives through the EU4U Initiative, supported by €15 million in EU grants.
