Tragic Incident at St. Mary's Hospital in Hamburg: Three Lives Lost in Hospital Fire

Elderly patients, aged 84 to 87, succumbed to a hospital blaze - Elderly patients, aged 84 to 87, perished in a hospital blaze.

The night of June 1st, 2025, took a grim turn for Hamburg's St. Mary's Hospital when a blaze erupted on the geriatric ward. Fire department spokesman Lorenz Hartmann described the scene as "apocalyptic."

Patients on the upper floors, trapped by the ever-climbing flames, pleaded for help from shattered windows. The fire consumed the ground floor and swiftly spread upwards, blanketing the neurological ward in suffocating smoke.

Three patients—men aged 84, 85, and 87—did not survive. One person was severely injured, and a total of 34 were hurt.

Rescuing those trapped in the burning building proved to be a harrowing task. Elderly patients in wheelchairs were pushed through the smoke-filled corridors, while those mobile enough were evacuated via aerial ladders or portable ladders.

A survivor shared their experiences with the "Hamburg Evening Post": "We were led to the emergency room in haste. Those who could walk on their own had to, while the rest were wheeled out. It all unfolded rather swiftly and in an organized manner."

Pitch-black corridors: the firefighters' struggle

The firefighters, armed with flashlights, confronted a harrowing scene of pitch-black corridors due to the thick mixture of smoke and steam. The severe smoke made saving those left in their rooms initially impossible, as rescuers risked smoke inhalation on the corridor. Emergency workers had to tackle the fiery maelstrom from both sides of House 2 within the four-story building. Hartmann couldn't specify the exact number of residents within.

The fire department received the call around 0.23 am, and upon arrival, reinforcements were requested. Ultimately, four fire engines manned by 160 firefighters and supported by numerous aid organizations joined the rescue effort, totaling 220 emergency personnel. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes of their arrival.

Accessing the Ground Floor: The Tall Barrier

Despite the fire raging on the ground floor, rescuers struggled to reach the patients crying for help. The hospital's layout bore an additional obstacle: a deep ditch surrounding the building's foundation, which made it difficult for firefighters in heavy protective gear to climb the 2.5 meters needed to access the necessary windows.

Firefighters eventually managed to climb up and evacuate the trapped patients, though the windows they encountered were made of plastic and had been melted due to the flames. A soot smear reached the top floor, where the rescuer's flashlights flickered well after the fire's suppress. It is believed that the firefighters were checking for toxic gases.

arson investigators on the ground

Arson investigators from the state criminal police are at the scene, examining the burned-out room and combing through evidence. The police are still keeping tight-lipped regarding the case's cause and are interviewing numerous witnesses, with no results expected for the day.

Founded in 1958, St. Mary's Hospital is a renowned establishment in Hamburg's Hohenfelde district, boasting around 600 beds and--in an average year--treating about 93,000 patients[3]. The majority of the injured could be admitted to the hospital's central emergency room, while only two had to be transferred to nearby facilities.

The Guilty Seized: A Missing Piece in the Puzzle

Following the extinguishing of the flames and the rescue operation, a 72-year-old patient was taken into custody on suspicion of having started the fire. The police have hinted at substantial evidence pointing to the man's involvement in the crime.
