Almaty's Children's Emergency Medical Center Embraces Pediatric Arthroscopy

In a significant leap forward for pediatric orthopedic care in Kazakhstan, Almaty's Children's Emergency Medical Center started offering arthroscopic procedures in 2020. This advanced minimally invasive surgical technique, increasingly popular worldwide, has shown promising results in treating joint conditions with less recovery time [1][5].

The center's focus on pediatric arthroscopy has been actively developing, with the aim of becoming a centre of competencies in the field. Over the past two years, two large masterclasses have been held, the latest of which was held in partnership with the 'BI Zhuldyzai' fund and the 'Mүmkiндіk' program.

The key expert for these masterclasses was Vladimir Aвраменко, a top-category doctor from the St. Petersburg Pediatric Medical University. The masterclass included 10 complex interventions using the 'ALL inside' method, and enabled an exchange of clinical experience between Kazakhstani specialists and Dr. Aвраменко [2].

As a result of these masterclasses, the center has been able to expand its coverage of patients and the range of surgeries provided under the OСМС framework. A total of 24 knee joint surgeries were performed, with all children now in satisfactory condition and preparing for a course of outpatient rehabilitation. The rehabilitation process is expected to last from three to six months.

The surgeries were performed by highly skilled specialists from Kazakhstan and Russia, and the center is prepared to accept patients from all over Kazakhstan. In fact, 38 children from various regions of the country, including Shymkent, Taraz, Taldykorgan, Aktau, Atyrau, and Kyzylorda, were examined during the masterclass.

The surgeries were performed under the compulsory social medical insurance program, allowing patients to receive treatment free of charge. This initiative underscores the commitment of Almaty's Children's Emergency Medical Center to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to children across Kazakhstan.
