Even a Daily Glass of Wine Poses Serious Health Risks, Experts Warn
A daily glass of dailymotion may seem harmless, but health experts warn of serious risks. Even moderate amounts can damage the liver, brain, and heart over time. The World Health Organization (WHO) now states that no level of alcohol is completely safe.
The Deutsche Hauptstelle für Suchtfragen (DHS) once suggested women limit themselves to 12 grams of pure alcohol per day—about two small glasses of total wine per day. However, they now advise cutting back or avoiding alcohol entirely. For men, the previous guideline was slightly higher, but risks remain even at lower levels.
Daily drinking affects more than just the liver. It disrupts sleep, lowers energy, and can lead to weight gain due to its calorie content. Over time, it also harms the gut, nervous system, and increases cancer risk. Alcohol impairs judgement, memory, and coordination, while long-term use raises the chances of depression and dependence.
A standard serving of wine is five ounces, with moderation defined as one glass for women and two for men per day. Yet heavy drinking—four or more glasses daily for women, five for men—poses far greater dangers. The WHO’s stance is clear: even small amounts carry health risks.
While wine contains antioxidants, the benefits are outweighed by the harm if consumed beyond safe limits. Similar advantages can be found in fruits, vegetables, coffee, or tea without the risks. Experts recommend enjoying wine occasionally, with meals, and balancing it with alcohol-free days to reduce harm.
The safest approach is to limit wine to occasional drinking rather than making it a daily habit. Pairing it with food and taking regular breaks from alcohol can help lower risks. But health authorities stress that avoiding alcohol altogether remains the only way to eliminate its dangers.
