Ex-Cycling Star Admits to Severe Alcohol Addiction
Former Belgian cyclist Leif Hoste has spoken openly about his struggle with alcohol addiction after retiring from professional racing in 2012. The ex-pro revealed how his drinking spiralled out of control, leading to multiple life-threatening situations.
At his lowest point, Hoste consumed three bottles of vodka each day. His addiction became so severe that he was rushed to the emergency room at least ten times, with blood alcohol levels exceeding 4.5‰—far beyond the lethal threshold for most people.
He described battling alcoholism as harder than any challenge he faced in his cycling career. Despite narrowly escaping death on several occasions, he continued drinking until recently. Now, after six months of sobriety, Hoste is determined to turn his life around.
Hoste’s decision to speak out comes as he focuses on maintaining his recovery. His story highlights the dangers of untreated addiction and the long road to sobriety. He remains committed to staying alcohol-free and rebuilding his life.
