The risk of heart disease also increases due to inflammation and high blood pressure. Excessive sugar intake contributes to type-2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and increased body fat. It also accelerates skin ageing, leading to sagging and wrinkles, and is linked to an increased risk of depression and other mood changes. Furthermore, it can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by overloading the liver and may contribute to cognitive decline over time. Added sugars provide 'empty calories', lacking essential vitamins and minerals, and contribute to weight gain and obesity.
