The head of the Joint Poison Control Centre (GGIZ) in Erfurt has warned parents against relying on AI for advice in child poisoning emergencies. Dagmar Prasa, a specialist in paediatric medicine and toxicology, urged families to call poison control immediately instead of searching online. This year alone, the centre handled over 25,200 cases, with more than a quarter involving children under 18.

Prasa stressed that artificial intelligence can give incorrect or dangerous information about potential poisons. She advised parents to skip online research and contact the GGIZ directly on 0361-730730, as delays could worsen a child’s condition. The centre fields calls from private individuals and hospitals across four states.

Most enquiries came from Saxony, with around 7,680 cases reported. Thuringia followed with nearly 3,680 calls, while Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania accounted for roughly 3,180 and 2,600 respectively. To prevent accidents, Prasa recommended that parents educate themselves in advance using trusted medical websites. She highlighted that knowing common household hazards could help avoid emergencies before they occur.

The GGIZ continues to operate as a key resource for poisoning cases in eastern Germany. With over 7,000 child-related incidents this year, the centre emphasises quick action and professional advice. Parents are reminded to keep the emergency number 0361-730730 accessible and avoid unchecked online sources.
