Psilocybin for Gambling Addiction Treatment: A Novel Approach for Veterans
A collaborative effort between Heroic Hearts, a UK veterans' charity, and researchers from the University of Gibraltar is set to explore the potential of psilocybin, the active psychedelic component in magic mushrooms, as a treatment for gambling addiction. The study will take place during a week-long retreat in the Netherlands, where volunteers will receive psilocybin, guided experiences, and therapy.
The experiment will commence with ten veterans undergoing a screening process. During the week-long retreat, two psilocybin ceremonies will occur, with participants receiving up to five grams of truffles under the guidance of trained therapists. The full program, which encompasses nine weeks, includes two weeks of preparation and coaching for the volunteers before undergoing the ceremonies.
Keith Abraham, CEO of Heroic Hearts, expresses optimism about the potential success of the treatment, acknowledging the tremendous potential of psilocybin. However, he emphasizes the importance of waiting for the results of the research to validate the treatment's efficacy.
Veterans are disproportionately vulnerable to gambling addiction, often turning to gambling as a means to cope with distress or manage post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Standard treatments have had limited success, prompting the exploration of alternative methods. Earlier this year, Imperial College London's Centre for Psychedelic Research began experimenting with brain imaging technology to address the issue.
Research concerning psilocybin suggests that it induces feelings of insightfulness and a new perspective on oneself, thus offering potential benefits for addiction treatment. David Erritzoe, who worked on a related project, emphasizes the importance of preparing patients adequately to fully leverage the experience provided by psilocybin.
While direct clinical evidence related to gambling addiction is not yet available for this specific study, the therapeutic use of psilocybin, combined with psychotherapy, shows promise in easing symptoms of mental health disorders, including compulsive behaviors like addiction.
