Fatal vehicular mishap involving three students from our website in Germany prompts safety measures for city residents
In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the Vietnamese community in Germany and beyond in mourning, a car crash on Mainzer Landstraße in Frankfurt's Gallus district on July 6, 2025, claimed the lives of two 23-year-old twin brothers, Nguyen Duy Quang and Nguyen Quang Minh. Their friend, Hoang Trung Hieu, also 27, was severely injured in the accident.
The twin brothers, who were dental assistant trainees living in Hamburg, were riding electric scooters when they were hit by a 23-year-old driver who swerved into the bicycle lane. One brother died at the scene, while the other passed away later in the hospital. Hieu, who sustained severe head and leg injuries, had to undergo a leg amputation.
The driver, reportedly speeding and under the influence of nitrous oxide, initially fled the scene but later surrendered to the police. He now faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, attempted murder, serious bodily harm, and fleeing the scene.
The incident has deeply affected the Vietnamese community in Germany, with fundraising efforts raising over €100,000 to support the victims' families in Vietnam. Memorial and funeral arrangements are ongoing, with local community support.
Consul General Luu Xuan Dong has informed the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany and assigned representatives to contact local authorities and police. Dr Kambiz Ghawami, Chairman of the World University Service Germany, will lead the fundraising initiative and coordinate with the Consulate General to facilitate the repatriation process.
A funeral ceremony was held at St. Petri Church in Hamburg for the deceased brothers, while Hieu remains in critical condition. The suspect's vehicle also collided with Hieu's e-scooter, and he was thrown onto the car's windscreen and onto the bonnet before being ejected from the vehicle and left on the road for another 150 metres.
All three students came from disadvantaged families, and they had been studying in Hamburg since early 2022. The suspect's 24-year-old fiancée, who was part of the group, was physically unharmed but has suffered severe psychological trauma.
The Consulate General of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Frankfurt am Main has been conducting citizen protection measures following the incident. A fundraising drive is planned at the Vietnamese Consulate General in Frankfurt am Main on July 28 to support the families with repatriation costs and the lengthy treatment of Hieu.
