FDA Cracks Down on Iodized Salt Iodine Levels in Davao
The FDA 11 has stepped up enforcement of iodine content in iodized salt, following recent findings of non-compliance in the Davao region. Under RA 8172, iodized salt must contain 30-70 ppm of iodine, with at least 15 ppm expected to be retained at the household level.
In 2024 and early 2025, several salt brands tested did not meet the standard, with some falling below and others exceeding the required iodine level. The FDA has reminded manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers to comply with the mandated iodine content levels. Non-compliant manufacturers were issued notices of violation and health advisories, but some repeatedly fail to comply.
Inspections cover the iodization process, personnel expertise, iodine solution usage, calibration records, and machine maintenance logs. In the Davao region, one of the two iodized salt manufacturers has been found compliant, while the other is awaiting inspection. Market monitoring revealed that some popular iodized salt brands in the region failed to meet the required iodine fortification level.
Consumers can verify the compliance of iodized salt brands and manufacturers through the FDA's online verification portal. The FDA continues to monitor the certificate of product registration (CPR) and license to operate (LTO) of iodized salt brands and manufacturers through post-licensing inspection, ensuring they meet the prescribed iodine fortification levels.
