Fire at Portuguese elderly care home sends three to hospital
A fire broke out at an elderly care home in Medelo, Fafe, on Monday evening. Emergency services rushed to the scene after the blaze was reported at 8:24 p.m. Three people were taken to hospital, while dozens more received treatment for smoke exposure from the fire.
The incident began when flames were detected inside the nursing home. By the time firefighters, INEM paramedics, and GNR officers arrived, the fire had already been put out. Crews immediately assessed the residents and staff for injuries.
Thirty people were treated on-site for smoke inhalation and stress. Among them, two care home employees and one elderly resident required further medical attention. All three were transported to hospital for observation.
The fire caused no major structural damage to the building. Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of the blaze. Investigations are expected to continue in the coming days.
