Fire department receives safety equipment from VdF-NRW for firefighter usage

In a bid to enhance fire safety awareness among the elderly, Provinzial and the Association of Fire Departments (VdF) NRW have joined forces to provide safe fire safety kits. The partnership was announced at an event held at VdF NRW's headquarters in Wuppertal, where fifteen fire safety kits were handed over.

Maria Koch, fire safety education and awareness representative at VdF NRW, emphasized the importance of intensifying fire safety education for seniors. She highlighted that as people age, they often react more slowly, have poorer vision and hearing, and may not perceive everyday dangers. Side effects and interactions of medications in seniors are often unknown, underestimated, or ignored, which can further impact their reaction ability and perception.

Each fire safety kit, consisting of a sturdy trolley filled with information and display materials, serves as a demonstration tool for adult fire safety education. The contents of the kit include a sign set with fire safety and rescue symbols, smoke and CO2 detectors, fire extinguisher spray, an emergency box, and a demonstration of the function of a stove guard, which warns of fire danger on the stove.

The safe fire safety kits, provided by Provinzial, are not limited to seniors alone. They can be used for younger adults as well. Christoph Dohr, head of the main department for damage prevention and risk assessment at Provinzial, confirmed the partnership with fire departments. He reiterated Provinzial's commitment to supporting fire safety education and awareness.

In 2021, Provinzial and the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW worked together to develop a training program for fire instructors specifically aimed at seniors. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the increased fire risk in apartments, particularly in the kitchen, which is the room with the highest fire risk for elderly people.
