Fisherman, 67, dies after calling for help as tide traps him at Omaha Beach
A 67-year-old fisherman died while fishing alone at Omaha Beach on 9 March 2024. Younchang Ko was found floating face-down in the water after calling for help as the tide rose. Emergency services were unable to revive him.
Ko had been fishing in knee-deep water near the estuary mouth when the current grew stronger. Witnesses saw him struggling and tried to reach him, but the conditions were too dangerous. He was wearing a wetsuit, water shoes, and a hat—though no life jacket.
A post-mortem examination failed to confirm the exact cause of death. Ko had a known heart condition, leaving uncertainty over whether he drowned or suffered a cardiac event. He had called for help but did not attempt to swim.
The coroner later emphasised the risks of fishing alone and without a life jacket. They advised anglers to always fish in pairs and wear flotation devices to prevent similar tragedies.
Ko’s body was recovered later the same day. The case highlights the dangers of changing tides and strong currents, even in shallow water. Authorities continue to urge caution for those fishing in coastal areas.
