Folic Acid Myths and Exercise Missteps Put Pregnancies at Risk

New research highlights widespread confusion about pregnancy health, particularly around folic acid and exercise. Many adults hold incorrect beliefs that could affect the wellbeing of unborn babies. Experts are now calling for better education on nutrition and safe activities during pregnancy.

A lack of folic acid in early pregnancy has been linked to serious developmental conditions, including autism and attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). The nutrient is also crucial for preventing spinal defects and supporting brain development. Yet, one in five young women and half of men remain unaware of its importance. Some even mistakenly believe folic acid is unsafe, putting babies at risk.

The NHS advises women to take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from at least three months before conception until the 12th week of pregnancy—or longer, if needed. Despite this guidance, misinformation persists. Gynaecologists, nutritionists, and organisations like the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe (DGGG), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) are pushing for clearer public health messaging.

Exercise during pregnancy also faces misunderstandings. Almost a third of adults think swimming is unsafe for expectant mothers and babies. Meanwhile, one in seven young people aged 18 to 24 question whether moderate activity, such as walking or light workouts, could cause harm. In reality, swimming and gentle exercise can ease back pain, boost circulation, and reduce stress for pregnant women.

The gaps in knowledge about folic acid and safe exercise reveal a need for stronger public health campaigns. Clearer guidance could help prevent avoidable risks to babies’ development. Health authorities continue to stress the importance of early folic acid use and staying active during pregnancy.
