Former AFL Star Sam Docherty Named Ambassador for Gambling Harm Awareness Week

Former Carlton star Sam Docherty has been named as an ambassador for Gambling Harm Awareness Week 2025. Docherty, who played 184 AFL games, will work with the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) to raise awareness about gambling addiction and provide support to those affected.

Docherty, who began his career with the Brisbane Lions in 2011, revealed a hidden addiction to percocet he faced during his playing days. He sought help about four years ago, admitting to keeping his issues private due to feelings of guilt and shame. Docherty's addiction started around the time of his father's death and was linked to these emotions.

Despite facing significant personal health challenges, including two diagnoses of testicular cancer, Docherty returned to play AFL at the highest level. As an ambassador, he advises setting a deposit limit for gambling to prevent impulsive betting, especially after drinking alcohol.

Sam Docherty's appointment as an ambassador for Gambling Harm Awareness Week 2025 highlights the importance of open conversations about gambling addiction. By sharing his personal experiences, Docherty aims to help others manage their gambling and avoid addiction. The VGCCC welcomes his involvement in promoting responsible gambling and supporting those affected.
