From Rendsburg to Kokorou: German Doctor Elected King in Africa - From German Surgeon to Niger's King: A Royal Transition at 75

Dr. Issifi Djibey, a 75-year-old former surgeon from Rendsburg, has been elected the new king of Kokorou in Niger. The vote took place on a Sunday, marking the end of a succession process after the previous ruler's 52-year reign. Djibey, who once led vascular and thoracic surgery at Rendsburg Hospital, now steps into a role blending tradition with modern leadership.

The city of Rendsburg congratulated him on the appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to guide Kokorou. His election follows encouragement from family in Niger, where he triumphed over other legitimate heirs to the throne.

Djibey's connection to Germany spans over five decades. He first arrived in 1970 on a scholarship from Kokorou to study medicine. After a long career in healthcare, he now returns to his roots—but with a royal title.

Kokorou, a province roughly the size of Germany's Saarland, is home to about 150,000 people. As king, Djibey will act as a link between the local community and Niger's central government. His influence is significant, though not absolute, requiring cooperation with officials and traditional leaders.

His plans for Kokorou include expanding infrastructure, modernising agriculture, and improving healthcare. Tradition also demands a royal residence, which he intends to build. However, much of his time will still be spent in Germany, where his family lives. During his absences, a regent will oversee affairs in Niger.

The transition follows the death of the previous king in 2023. Djibey, one of several heirs, secured the throne after a competitive succession process. His dual life—between Europe and Africa—will shape how he governs in the years ahead.

Djibey takes on a role that balances tradition with progress. His medical background and decades in Germany may bring fresh approaches to Kokorou's development. The province now watches as its new king begins to implement his vision—while maintaining ties to both his adopted home and his ancestral land.
