Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder that is the most common cause of inherited intellectual disability, affecting approximately 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females. This condition is caused by mutations in the FMR1 gene, which leads to a deficiency or absence of the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), crucial for normal neural development and function.

Pharmacological treatments aim to manage symptoms rather than cure the disorder, with stimulants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics being used in some cases.
Novel treatments under investigation include gene therapy, protein-replacement therapy, and R-loop therapy to reactivate the silenced FMR1 gene, potentially reversing the genetic basis of the syndrome.
