German Armed Forces to Rename Hindenburg Barracks After Female War Hero Friederike Krüger
The German Armed Forces are considering a significant rename for the Hindenburg barracks in Munster. The proposed new name, Friederike Krüger barracks, honours a remarkable soldier from the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation. Friederike Krüger, who disguised herself as a man to fight, received the Iron Cross for bravery and was buried with military honours.
Friederike Krüger's bravery and dedication have earned her a place in German military history. She initially fought under a male alias but was later permitted to serve openly due to her valour. Her story has inspired the German Armed Forces to propose renaming the Hindenburg barracks in her honour. This would make it one of the few Bundeswehr barracks named after a real soldier.
The current proportion of women in the German Armed Forces stands at over 13 percent. However, excluding medical jobs, this figure drops below 10 percent. The Soldier Equality Act aims to increase this proportion to at least 20 percent. This rename, if confirmed, would coincide with efforts to promote gender equality within the military.
