German Parents Worry Over Conscription: Record Visits, New Members for Peace Groups
Parents across Germany are expressing concern about the potential reinstatement of conscription, leading to a surge in counseling inquiries about military service. This trend is reflected in the growing membership of the German Peace Society - United War Resisters (DFGVK) and increased traffic on its website.
The DFGVK's website received a record 125,000 visitors in September, with a quarter of them being concerned parents. This marks a significant increase from previous months and indicates a growing trend. The organization's leader, Michael Schulze von Glaßer, reports that the DFGVK has gained around 64,000 new members this year, compared to about 50,800 at the end of 2023.
The Evangelical Working Group for Conscientious Objection and Peace (EAK) is also experiencing a continuous rise in inquiries this year. Parents, grandparents, young people, reservists, and active soldiers are all seeking counseling from the EAK, reflecting the widespread concern about military service.
The growing number of inquiries about conscientious objection and the increase in membership at organizations like the DFGVK suggest that the potential reinstatement of conscription is a significant concern for many families in Germany. Counseling centers are working to support those affected and provide information on their rights and options.
